Photos of Places of Worship in Canada are very welcome. So far 99% of the photos taken for this project have been taken by Jim Spurway, who conceived the project in 2007, having noticed that the religious heritage in Canada was being threatened.
It is time to have more people involved in the discovery, identification, photography and finally the research of the history of places of worship of any faith in Canada. Check the website to see if we already have a photo of your local building. Please note, that only Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick are fully loaded. Locations in other provinces can be submitted and will be integrated onto the website when that area is loaded. Also on the website are “No Picture” locations. These locations are known about, but no one has photographed it. Also, if you have an old photo of a building, please scan and submit following the instructions in Point 8 below.
General Instructions
First is what constitutes a place of worship. For this project a Place of Worship is a location where religious worship open to the public is occurring or has occurred over a period of time. This does not include Shrines, Monuments, cloistered monasteries or convents nor chapels and prayer rooms in airports or hospitals.
Unedited photos with an 4:3 or 3:4 aspect ratio are the best ones to submit, as this is limited using our website software. This is the standard size in a 35mm film camera image and is also standard on most SLR digital cameras. Most new cell phones give you the option to select a 4:3 ratio instead of their 16:9 standard.
We ask for unedited photos, as this allows us to prepare the image for website display. Editing and cropping photos can skew the Aspect Ratio. Please do not photo edit the picture to remove items in the photo. At Hallowed Timbers Photography, we may crop the photos to focus in on the building by removing other buildings and such while still maintaining the Aspect Ratio.
Please try to make sure that the whole building or section of the building used as the place of worship is in the image.
Before or after taking the picture, please investigate to see if there is any historical or cultural information about the location. These could include, but are not limited to a cornerstone of the building, a provincial or federal heritage plaque and signage showing some of the history or lore attached to the site. Photograph or make notes of this information. We will include the data and prose on the website.
Data we are also collecting
Please use the form ” Submission of details about a place of worship” https://placesofworshipca.us7.cdn-alpha.com/submission-of-details-about-a-place-of-worship/for the actual data collection after the photograph is ready for submission
Full Name of the Place of Worship and what religion this building serves. In some cases, the building may have originally served one religious community and then was passed on to another. Both of the congregations and their dates would be useful.
Street address – not all buildings have a street number posted, so an estimate is acceptable using the numbers of buildings on either side and/or across the road.
The GPS at the main entrance. This is a two part number with latitude first, longitude second. For Canada, the latitude number can be between 41.909019 and 83.114289; and the longitude between -141.001981 and -47.524239.
The date the photograph was taken and the name of the photographer is necessary. All photos submitted will be protected by copyright! It will be copyrighted in the photographer’s name and a portion of any proceeds of a sale of the image will be paid to that photographer. If a photographer prefers to remain anonymous, the photo will be copyrighted to Hallowed Timbers Photographer. In the text on the website, the data on the website will say visited by Anonymous.
Date the building was built. In some cases the original building may have been destroyed, and a replacement one built. Date of the original construction, reason for the replacement (congregation outgrew the original, building became unsafe, destroyed by fire, or natural disaster).
In cases when the place of worship is no longer active, when was it closed? If the building is no longer there, when was it demolished?
